I am also running Fusion 4.1.1. I have several spreadsheets created on the PC (Windows) Excel (older versions) that are workbooks with several tabs and Macros that have been set up to run various programs. Was considering buying 2011 Excel for Mac, but was worried about running the older excel programs with Macros on the Mac side.

It's clearly there but the Mac won't open it in Excel. Our PCs open the files just fine in Excel 2010. What could have changed?

No, that is not supported in Excel 2011. In a workbook with multiple tabs, can you color each tab individually? You could do it in Excel X and 2003, but not since. Yes, you can color tabs individually. Did Microsoft bring back the ability to see (and manipulate) page breaks in a page-break view?

There’s a full 32-bit color palette instead of 40 colors. Drag-resizing a window now updates it in real time, instead of merely dragging an outline. SmartArt has over 150 pre-made templates (up from 80-ish), all of which you can customize. A media browser provides fast access to photos, audio, movies, clip art, symbols, and shapes. For the most part these new features work quite well. There is some lag when you live-resize windows, even on current hardware, but the delay is bearable.

Every time I try to view an XLSX/PPTX/DOCX file in an email attachment. I've completely uninstalled Outlook 2011, done system traces to see what I could find, view all sorts of logs, re-installed multiple times, etc. Even upgraded to Lion. Turns out, it was the NAME of my hard drive causing the issue.

Happily, you can find the Borders option on the Formatting toolbar, which you turn on by choosing View→Toolbars→Formatting from Excel’s menu. You can find more presets for borders in the Format Cells dialog, which you can display by pressing Command-1 and choosing the Border tab.

Thanks for that screen shot! I have a couple questions. You say you have Excel 2011 but the icon in that photo is the more recent version. Is it possible you have two versions of excel on your computer and you want to open in 2011 but are opening in the more recent version? What version of excel was the file created on?

Microsoft obviously thought XML import was of general enough interest that they included it in the Windows version of Excel, so they don't really agree with you. I don't agree with digitalformula that Excel for Mac is 'almost useless' without XML import capabilities, but it's a big oversight on Microsoft's part, particularly because most of their enterprise applications speak XML. Also, Mac users tend to be more on the technical side (anecdotally; most of the people I know use Windows, but most of the developers I know use Macs), so you'd think the Mac version would be the one to have XML import.

Did Microsoft improve the program’s ability to paste text from external applications into merged cells? Yes and no: Microsoft says that it fixed some bugs regarding pasting into merged cells, but it can’t guarantee that all data from all apps will paste successfully. Can a cell in Excel reference data that's available from a Website and then update at selected intervals of time? Yes and no: You can update a cell in Excel reference data from a Website, but you cannot set the interval time. Does Excel 2011 include Fourier transforms? Does Excel 2011 support Excel 2004’s tools for matrix manipulations (TRANSPOSE(array), MMULT(array1,array2), MINVERSE(squareArray))? Does Excel 2011 support what used to be called Graphical Goal Seek for XY Scatter Plots?

Changing all scripts and files to use.xls (the good old fashioned way) did the trick. Let's face it MS can't fix this issue.there is plenty of stupid reasons floating around why this does not work. Some are network sharing issues to how you name your hard drive. But lets also face that MS has demolished perfectly working programs and have not made them better.but have made them worse.by removing features and becoming less graphic friendly.

Can I directly open Office file from SharePoint and save it back? Yes, although you will not have Read Only/Edit option to choose from before you open it in Office for Mac. If he had found inconsistencies between PC and Mac Excel, he would have whined about them in our private Excel MVP forum. But he's not written a word along those lines. Hope that helps. (CFO, Solstice Mobile) Sep 11, 2013 I made the switch from PC to Mac about a year ago and although there are some nuances to running Excel on the Mac verse a PC, you will get used to it once you learn the shortcuts as you probably use on the PC. Keep in mind if you are using any current features in the latest version of Excel for Windows that they might not be available on the Mac since they seem to be a version or two behind but I haven't hit a snag yet. The overall reason why I like the Mac now is that it's just a more intuitive system and things seem to just work!

Each of these are only valid for one user on one Mac; so, if you have more than one Mac, such as an iMac and a MacBook Pro, you won't be able to use it on both. Also, you can't share it with your family members, and if you happen to also work on a Windows PC, you won't be able to install the software.

I had done something which increased (a lot!) the size of the file. Then, I selected the contents of the spreadsheet I was working on and copy/pasted to a new file. This new file was again 300KB and everything started to work back again. I hope it helps. There are two major differences between the two: First, Microsoft ported the Windows Office VBA environment to the Mac. The engine was upgraded from VBA 6 to VBA 6.5. The company also enabled some functions—such as FormatCurrency, FormatNumber, and Replace—that had been disabled in Office 2004. Second, whenever it was possible and made sense, Microsoft aligned the object models in Office 2011 with those used in Office 2010 for Windows. The company says that should result in much better compatibility across the two platforms. Is the VBA in Excel 2011 compatible with the version in Office 2004?

But you won't be able to use Monte Carlo simulation and risk analysis, solve optimization problems involving uncertainty and risk, or use the forecasting, data mining or text mining features of Analytic Solver Platform. You can define a basic optimization model using Solver in Excel for Mac, save the workbook, open that workbook in AnalyticSolver.com, and solve it there and extend it further. The basic Excel Solver is included when you install Microsoft Excel 2011 or later for Mac. This has been true since Excel 2011 Service Pack 1 (Version 14.1.0). You do not have to (and should not try to) download Solver from this website. If you are still using Excel 2008 for Mac, we strongly recommend an upgrade to Excel 2011 or later. But if you absolutely cannot do this, you can download.

Is there a sort-by-format feature? I’d love to identify lines of data via conditional formatting or even manual formatting, and then sort them accordingly.

The Excel 2016 for Mac version is 15.19.1 I opened the program and went to Help>Check for update and it says there aren't any updates. Is there another way to get updates? When trying to open files I have done it every way possible. I started out trying to open it from the the start up window in Excel.

You can customize the Ribbon, or even disable it if you wish. It's context sensitive, so it changes to match the task at hand. For example, if you double-click an image, the Ribbon will open to a greatly improved set of image-editing commands. The Ribbon and toolbars are now integrated in each Excel window, so there’s nothing floating around outside your workspace. A couple of optional floating windows remain, but they’re not required in most typical spreadsheet work. The Ribbon’s tabs are compact, and the Ribbon itself can collapse to a single row of tabs when not in use. As a result, the new Excel’s work area doesn’t feel smaller than that of the older versions.

What could have changed?

You can also run a macro from the Developer tab on the Ribbon. If you don’t see the Developer tab, choose Excel > Preferences and click Ribbon, then select the check box before Developer and click OK. • Jim Hahn 1) I know there is a way to change/add keyboard shortcuts for Excel for Mac 2011. Is there a way to change/add keyboard shortcuts for the VBA side? There are just too many keys to hold down to do basic debugging. E.g., shift+command+I to “step into” from a breakpoint. I can’t see a way to change shortcuts.

As I mention in, you can’t create pivot charts in Excel for the Mac. It’s, hands down, my greatest aggravation with Excel. However, Excel for the Mac has an additional bug that renders any pivot chart created on a PC that includes a report filter utterly useless. You can see the options in the drop-down filter and even select them.

3.Can you open Excel (without clicking on a file), create a new spreadsheet, save it, quit excel, then try to open the file? Does the message still appear? 4.When did this first start happening?

There are literally hundreds of improvements, some very noticeable, others not quite as much so.

Score I got my MacBook. Those were created in Excel 2010 for PC.

The rest were created in Excel 2011 for Mac. You may be on to something though with the version number.

If that doesn't work, or if you don't trust AutoUpdate to do the right thing, you can download the latest updater and install it yourself. That'll download to your Downloads folder as a.pkg file. How to run the AutoUpdate installer • Double-click on 'Microsoft AutoUpdate 3.0.6.pkg' to launch the installer. • Click Continue. • Click Continue again to install it to your Mac's hard drive. • Click Install.

We use Word 2010 and Word 2011 under Windows 8 and OSX 10.8 and also recent versions of these OSs. It basically works great. But there are issues. I can NEVER log off Document connection (DC) – always have to Quit with it telling me I have documents open for editing even if I have just booted up and just started DC. I have tried booting out various preference files and similar but it always does this. I seem to have to log on far too often.
