We tested the filter to see how efficient it was and how much it could protect against information and sites unsuited for a certain age group. The bottom line McAfee Total Protection comes with a large number of computers in its license at a low price—but only for its first year. Those twelve months should provide good service, though: Total Protection was adept at identifying malware, while also coming with the extras of a robust firewall and a password manager. However, its high subsequent annual cost, the lack of Safari support for True Key, and lack of both active and passive ransomware monitoring pushes it down in the pack among peers.
Identity consists of three basic things: the True Key identity manager, a file shredder for deleting sensitive files, and McAfee Web Advisor. The latter is a separate download that is supposed to protect you from online threats by warning you about problems before you encounter them. It includes “misclick protection” to block malware or prevent landing on a phishing site via a bad link, typo protection that addresses mistyped URLs of popular websites, eg Google.com versus Gooogel.com. Adult, gambling or drug-related sites not recommended to minors are blocked by default when Parental controls is activated. You can change the settings of a default filter or you can opt for Custom filtering whenever it’s possible to perform the action based on various parameters. The final verdict McAfee’s antivirus protection for Mac is unknown, as it was not tested by third-party independent testing labs in their most recent tests. McAfee's test performance has been mixed, recently, so for example the company managed an excellent 5th place with a 100% protection rate in August 2018, but fell to a lowly 14th in the September 2018 test. Fortunately, AV-Comparatives also produces summary reports which average the results over multiple tests, giving a clearer view. The February - June 2018 report was relatively positive, placing McAfee in a creditable 6th spot with a 99.6% protection rate. That puts in on a par with some quality competitors – Kaspersky and Avira were 4th and 5th with a 99.7% protection rate, Symantec 7th with 99.5% – and suggests there's no protection issue here that any regular user will ever notice. The AV-Test Home Windows for August 2018 confirms McAfee's effectiveness, with the test product blocking 100% of sample threats. We can't begin to compete with the time and resources the big testing labs put into their work, but what we can do is add to their findings with a small test of our own.
