A good third alternative, by the way, is to simply choose the option “Ask me what to do”, which means that every time it detects a new USB device, you’ll have the option of letting Parallels have it or let Mac OS X have it. Finally, if you are running Parallels and you find that your USB devices are being captured by Mac OS X but not your virtual guest OS, you can also go to the Devices menu, find the peripheral in question, and choose it to have Parallels wrest control from Mac OS X and hand it to your guest operating system.

Hi Parallels Team, I've been having severe issues with USB since the last Parallels update (a few days ago). I've contacted support but their solution has not helped so far (which was cloning the virtual machine and reinstalling Parallels tools). My issue is that my whole machine is crashing/rebooting as soon as I plug in my Xbox 360 controller. It was working perfectly fine before, now my whole iMac restarts when I either plug in the controller, or when it's plugged in and I start the Windows VM.

When I connect an external USB, it says that someone else is trying to access it (I assume the Mac). So I’m still trying to figure out how to get this to work. One more thing I think you should mention.

Despite the addition of numerous new features, tools and added functionality, the first iteration of Desktop for Mac 3.0 may be missing some of features that Parallels had planned for it. A Parallels, Inc. Representative stated at in January 2007 that version 3.0 would bring accelerated graphics, “multi-core virtual machines/virtual SMP, some SCSI support, a more Mac-like feel, as well as a more sophisticated coherence mode, dubbed Coherence 2.0”. While accelerated graphics have materialised, Coherence, as well as the overall look and feel of Parallels Desktop for Mac has only changed slightly. Also, support has not been implemented. It is currently unknown if these features have been abandoned altogether, or if they will show up in a later build of version 3.0. Build 4560, released on July 17, 2007, added an imaging tool which allowed users to add capacity to their virtual disks.

I found that a combination of both worked best for me. I installed Windows into a Boot Camp partition first, and then turned that partition into an active Parallels virtual machine. This way, I have the option of using Windows in the virtual machine, or restarting to run Windows natively at full speed. I was initially skeptical of the performance of a heavy application like Visual Studio running in a virtual machine. The option to restart to Windows via Boot Camp gave me a fallback in case Visual Studio was sluggish. There are some minor disadvantages to this method: you can’t pause the virtual machine or save it to a snapshot.

Just an update on my problems with connecting an external USB to parallels, according to this: It seems that maybe it has to do with the parallel builds responding to the latest Mac OS X 10.4 When I get home from work, I will try to update parallels and see if the problem gets solved. – – – Also, in my earlier post, I mentioned holding down the command button while starting up parallels. This is for starting up the parallels by (in my case at least) double clicking on vista lite.pvs. When I open parallels using the paralles desktop icon though, I don’t need to worry about holding down the command button because parallels starts without automatically launching the virtual machine.
