I’m not a Mac guy. One of our web designers is; he LOVES his Mac. And he does produce some really sharp images on it for us. So I know that more & more companies use Macs in the office. If not for everyday computing, then at least for specialist jobs like graphics work, web development, video. And like everyone else, Mac users will want to stay in contact with co-workers.

The Communicator client includes built-in Live Meeting functionality, Microsoft officials said earlier this year. The explained this way: 'One focus of Office for Mac 2011 was to integrate real-time communication features into Office applications like Word and PowerPoint and we expect that effort to continue. 'In addition to integration with Office, we need to support our two partners, Windows Live and Office Communications Server (aka Lync). Within Microsoft these are separate organizations that move quickly to add new, useful features for their respective users. 'In order to best support productivity with Office applications and the features of both partners, it was time for us to separate the applications. Separate apps will allow us to provide the best experience for both sets of users.'

But now that’s over with. Not only do we have a Lync client for the Mac, two clients for the iOS (iPhone/iPod Touch/iPad) are now available. Let’s take a look, hmm? Microsoft Lync for Mac Starting October 1st, Microsoft will ship. (Credit.) It’s got pretty much everything Lync for PC does: IM/Presence, voice and video, conferencing, desktop sharing, you name it. I don’t have a Mac to test this on, but the interface shots mirror Lync almost exactly.

Lync 2010 for iPad extends the power of Lync to your mobile device – including rich presence, instant messaging, audio conferencing, and calling features from a single, easy-to-use interface. Key Features: - View colleagues’ availability in real time and select the best way to communicate – initiating an instant message (IM), email, or a phone call. - Connect to Lync conference calls with a single touch, without requiring long numeric passcodes or conference numbers. - Make and receive calls using your Enterprise Voice (Lync ID) number only, so you can connect with others using a single, consistent identity.

You can use Lync for Mac with Lync Server 2010 and Lync Online (the Office 365 offering). (Microsoft’s site says that “some voice capabilities require Lync Server 2010 and are not available with Lync Online.” Doesn’t give specifics though.) Lync for Mac will be included with Office for Mac Standard 2011, via Volume Licensing. Google input tools for windows. Kind of glad they did; Mac users have dealt with Lync for Mac for too long. That said, the new Mac client does have limitations. A few features Windows users enjoy are not availableat least not at this stage.

After you finish, Load your Lync:mac 2011 client and put your login information. Make sure to add the user ID in the domainuser format 5. IDialog does this by alerting the user to the incoming call and providing the option to forward the call to their mobile phone, voice mail, or another device.” However, you can reach contacts, IM, and change your presence status. The interface is nearly identical to Microsoft Lync, too. IDialog is $9.99. Never let it be said that, when it comes to Lync, Microsoft ignored the Mac users! In fact, I think the timetable for this release is faster than average – Microsoft doesn’t usually release a Mac software version this fast. Maybe the third-party mobile apps have sped up timetables. I’m glad the mobile apps exist; several good options for every mobile platform makes Lync adoption that much easier.

Around the same time I got the 'missed conversation' email. Casual game player Basically works. Needs notifications. I first installed the app today. Easy to set up and I logged in fine.

If it is running in the background, you will receive the message but there's no notification. And you will only receive messages if you initiated the conversation from your iOS device. If someone initiated the conversation then the message will only go to the app on your computer. And messages don't sync between your iOS device and computer. You only see conversations that originated from the device. Thuyties Useless This app doesn't notify you if it isn't opened and running in the foreground. In terms of known issues, Microsoft has already published a list: One to note here: you can’t have both Lync for Mac and Skype for Business on Mac clients installed side-by-side. If you use Lync for Mac, uninstall it before installing Skype for Business. I came across one of the issues almost immediately. If you’re logged into Skype for Business with one account, but logged into Outlook with another, Skype Meeting functionality doesn’t come up in Outlook. Even when you’re logged in with the same account, you may need to use the “Online Meeting” button to add Skype Meeting URLs/dial-in numbers to a Meeting invite. When I first opened a new Meeting, I had a blank invite. I clicked the Online Meeting button, and you see the result below.

Tom works for Modality Systems, which ALSO has a Lync client for iPhone:. I mentioned it last year in my post. IDialog has since been updated for use with Lync Server as well. The one caveat with iDialog is that it does not take Lync calls directly. From their site: “a user can control incoming phone calls to their OCS or Lync phone numbers. IDialog does this by alerting the user to the incoming call and providing the option to forward the call to their mobile phone, voice mail, or another device.” However, you can reach contacts, IM, and change your presence status. The interface is nearly identical to Microsoft Lync, too.

Away status should indicate away, and busy should indicate unavailable states. It's poor practice to allow users to hide as 'Away' as that dilutes the accuracy of the presence engine and in my opinion degrades the overall value of the solution.

My Lync contacts were all there and I was able to message a few of my coworkers. Someone at Microsoft I spoke to said they would likely release an Android or IOS Lync / OCS client before they even looked at WP7. The only WP7 client i have seen yet in Australia is a 3rd party app thats based on CWA and theres no way im going to pay the price they are asking without even being able to trial the software.

Using multiple client policies also provides the flexibility to assign different sets of users to different presence configuration files in the event that not all users should have the same file. Another advantage of this approach is that this client policy parameter could be used to point to an invalid path to prevent users from enabling their own custom presence settings. By design if the Lync client is provided a configuration setting by both an in-band policy as well as a local registry setting for the same parameter then Lync will adhere to the in-band policy and ignore the registry setting. Thus to prevent users from configuring their own local custom files an administrator can define a defunct policy in Lync which will always override any local settings, effectively locking out changes applied at the workstation level. These directions will simply cover the basic steps of enabling this parameter on the default Global policy which will apply to all Lync users.
